Jesus liberates and heals the man. Salvation is holistic, bringing life to body, mind, spirit, and relationships. In a final demonstration of healing love, Jesus sends the nameless man home, where he becomes the first missionary to the Gentiles. There are ambiguities in this story, unanswered questions that have always troubled interpreters of this text. Why did Jesus negotiate with the demons and allow them to go into the pigs? Why did Jesus allow the pigs to be destroyed? Was this violence necessary?
